
One of the states most fundamental duties is to protect its people, and we have always made this responsibility a top priority. In times of crisis, Alabamians can rest assured that the state will be as prepared as any in the country. We have made great strides in making Alabama a safer place to live, and we will never stop working to protect our citizens. Protecting Alabama, we believe, is best measured in terms of the indicators below.

Department of Public Safety:
To effectively regulate the flow of traffic and thereby
decrease traffic fatalities on states roads from 829
people in 2006 and 728 people in 2008 to fewer than 650
people by the year 2013.
To issue driver licenses that comply with all benchmarks
of the Real ID Act by 5/11/2011. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources:
Decrease the annual number of
boating accidents that result in fatalities and injuries
by 2 as compared with FY06 (47 accidents), by the end of
FY12.
Increase the annual number of boat patrol hours expended
by 13,500 by the end of FY14 (47,249 hours) as compared
to FY06 (33,749).Department of Corrections:
To reduce the inmate to officer
ratio from 12.6:1 in FY2006 to 9.6:1 or lower by FY12.
Optimize healthcare costs to limit annual increases to
less than 6% through 2011.
To fully implement new programs that increase the chances
for offenders to succeed in the community after being
released and reduce the recidivism rate by 2% by 2012.Department of Forensic Sciences:
Reduce DNA backlog by 10% and
implement arrestee program by 2011.
Report 800 firearms cases per year by FY 2011.Administrative Office of the Courts:
To increase services for juveniles through evidence
based practices.
Board of Nursing:
To ensure nursing education programs are preparing
graduates for safe and effective practice by having
NCLEX pass rates of at least 80% for first time takers.
To conclude 75% of disciplinary cases within 6 months of
receiving the complaint by 2011. Alabama Emergency Management Agency:
Install/provide warning devices or
systems such as sirens, radios, or other equipment so
that 80% of the population is protected by warning
devices by the end of FY2013.
Alabama Forestry Commission:
To reduce loss to timberlands and
structures from wildfires by decreasing the ten year
rolling average of total acres burned by 25% by 2012.
Increase number of landowners assisted from 5,250
(baseline) to 7,750 by 2012.
Board of Pardons & Paroles:
Reduce recidivism rate to 30% of
national average of 51.8% by 2013.
Department of Youth Services:
Continue to divert youth from state DYS custody by subsidizing Community Alternative Management Programs (CAMP).
Labor Department:
Child Labor will increase the number of inspections
for businesses hiring minors to 2240 by the end of FY10.
