For the first time in history, through SMART Governing, decision makers have the tools necessary to actively manage state government and the public has adequate information to determine whether tax dollars are being put to good use. At any time, all agency planning, budgeting, and performance information may be viewed - that's powerful change.
For the past four years the Executive Planning Office has been building the SMART system to capture this information, which is necessary to track the work of government. Guided by the Governor's Priorities, agencies have set key goals to transform the state.
It's time for the next bold step. In 2009, through Results Alabama we will begin linking the Governor's Priorities and agency plans back to overall quality of life in our state. We will set an unprecedented level of accountability and transparency for state government in Alabama by tracking change that really matters to citizens, and we will create a system that will allow future Governors to create plans based on real data.
